Earlier this week, Riot began rolling out news on their new trading card game (TCG), Riftbound. Riftbound is an action-packed TCG that centers around strategy and dynamic movement between battlefields and the player’s home base. The game blends lore from the vibrant world of the Legends of Runeterra universe, showcasing iconic and beloved champions that players will have the opportunity to utilize in their decks.
Releasing in October of 2025, Riftbound: Origins will be launching as a foundational cornerstone for the game. Because of this, Origins is a bit less themed overall, but there is promise around certain themes for future sets. Riot aims to ensure that Origins serves as an inviting gateway for newcomers, setting the stage for a lasting and dynamic future for the game. With this first set, players can get excited to learn how to build around their favorite champions, get familiar with the game mechanics, and gear up to branch into future sets.
The development team has revamped the game’s design to embody the epic, memorable, and thrilling significance of the “League of Legends” experience. After some hands-on experience with the cards, we can safely say they will not disappoint, and we’re going to show you a first look at some of the Origins cards today.
An Early Look at the Collection
One of the standout aspects of Riftbound is its unique card design. Players can easily identify different card types – such as Battlefields, Units, Spells, Gear, Champions, and Legends – just by looking from across the table. This intuitive approach contributes to a seamless and enjoyable gameplay experience. Sorting cards is easier with 3 different color card backs, distinguishing the types of cards between the Legend and Rune cards from other playing cards.
The Champions Revealed
Origins will also introduce highly desirable alternative art cards, eye-catching borderless designs, and rare collectibles. Here are the Runes, Seals, Battlefields, and Recruits.
Each champion in Riftbound comes with its own special power, a dedicated champion unit, a signature spell, and a specific color combination. Every player will have a Legend and a matching champion to assist with powerful abilities. Their two rune identities will be the makeup of your deck, which gives players a variety of versions they can play their favorite champions. Rarity and Collectibles
Riftbound wouldn’t be a real TCG without collectibles! With this TCG created with the intention of showcasing cards face-up throughout your strategic gaming experience, you know these cards have to be epic. Rares in this card set are characterized by their full art designs, foiling, and frame breaks. Booster packs will be offering high randomization that can include up to three epic or higher cards, and some rare cards may also feature alternative art. Notably, all Rare and Up cards are always foil.
Among the rarest types are the Overnumbers, which don’t count as part of the standard set. These epic cards are produced in limited quantities, appearing roughly once per three boxes. The Overnumbers cards include incredible illustrations from some of the most talented artists in the League community. Additionally, Overnumbers come in two styles: non-signature and signature. These cards are adorned with an extra foil stamp and six layers of foil. Despite their rarity and collectible nature, these cards remain playable, though we would advise players to double-sleeve them.
