Comments: As Sister Marian is taken prisoner by the church, she is tortured and endures immense pain. She does not repent; she remains steadfast in her belief in her Holy Mother. The Hierophant harbors deep hatred for Marian.
It feels as though a rebellion is about to ignite. The church’s forces attack Marian while, outside in the city, the witches wait. One witch comes to Marian’s aid. Marian is shown to have faith in her Goddess and also believes in the Lord, though she clearly holds her Goddess—the Mother—in higher reverence.
The story is initially hard to follow, but it becomes clearer once the torture begins. There is mention of witches gathering outside, though we only get a brief glimpse of them. This issue feels like it needed more to happen. Marian is visually striking, even while bound and imprisoned.
With Marian and the witches, it would have been nice to see more of them in action. We do see one witch attack in animal form, but beyond that, there is little payoff.
The art portrays Marian as a beautiful woman, and her fiery passion shines through as she stands up to the Hierophant. This ruler of the church goes too far and pushes too hard, and the cost is high. As both sides gather their forces, the question remains: which side will win?
