Absolute Superman # 16– Building on the events of “Absolute Evil,” Superman encounters Absolute Hawkman. The interaction appears friendly at first but quickly turns hostile, reflecting Hawkman’s characterization from the previous story. He urges Clark to make a deal and return to Lazarus Corp., leading to intense action that makes the story engaging. Jason Aaron effectively continues to develop and reshape Superman’s mythos, blending classic tropes—like Lois Lane becoming a reporter—with surprising twists, making this series a valuable addition to the Absolute line. The new take on Hawkman is both eerie and intriguing; despite claiming to be one of the “good guys,” he’s willing to ignore Lazarus Corp.’s actions, revealing a dark moral side that adds complexity. With action-packed sequences and plot threads from “Absolute Evil,” this issue showcases the expansive world Kal-El protects, while incorporating horror elements—like a menacing Absolute Brainiac—that are unusual for Superman but fitting here, making this a standout issue.

DC K.O.: Boss Battle # 1– While serving as another tie-in to “DC K.O.,” this special is a clever and thoroughly entertaining crossover. It features several DC characters facing off against a variety of heroes from publishers like IDW, Dynamite Entertainment, and Archie Comics. Highlights include Superman vs. Homelander, Black Lightning and Plastic Man taking on Mortal Kombat’s Sub-Zero, and Wonder Woman battling Red Sonja. The fights jump rapidly between winners and losers, but Jeremy Adams maintains a chaotic, action-packed energy throughout. While some battles feel rushed or end inconclusively just as they get interesting, the special delivers an innovative use of the Multiverse with surprising mashups that work brilliantly. This entry stands out in the DC K.O. series, tapping into nostalgia effortlessly and making for a one-of-a-kind event that shouldn’t be missed.

Planet of the Apes vs. Fantastic Four # 1– This crossover uniquely blends both universes, infusing 1960s nostalgia to create a compelling reason for the FF’s arrival on the planet (with The Red Ghost playing a role). The real intrigue unfolds when iconic characters like Cornelius, Zira, Doctor Zeus, and General Urdu acquire the powers of the FF. Josh Trujillo skillfully sets the stage for the series, which, despite its slow-burning pacing in this issue, takes time to explore its more interesting ideas. Strong characterization from both the FF and P.O.T.A. casts, coupled with Andrea Di Vito’s stellar artwork, elevates each page. Even with the measured pace, the concept remains intriguing enough to keep fans invested, promising that future issues will pick up the tempo.

Thundarr the Barbarian # 1 – Thundarr, Princess Ariel, and Ookla the Mok return in this new series by Jason Aaron, who demonstrates a deep and genuine affection for the characters. Alongside artist Kewber Baal, the series pays tribute to the classic 80s cartoon while honoring its original concept. Rather than overhauling the story, the series recaps its beginnings much like the original show, reintroducing Thundarr, Ariel, and Ookla with excitement. The story successfully captures the heroic fantasy elements and delivers plenty of sword-swinging action, sure to engage longtime fans, while underwater adventures and time-travel aspects add even more intrigue. Thundarr the Barbarian stands as another impressive property from Dynamite Entertainment, celebrating the contributions of Steve Gerber, Jack Kirby, and Alex Toth. Ultimately, fans who grew up in the ‘80s will find this series a faithful and thrilling homage to the beloved animated classic.
