Maxine Slaughter is featured here. She is a tough girl. As a white Mask, she is part of a group, yet we can see that this life is not for her. This book does give us a step-by-step, short form of how one becomes a member of the Order of St. George and a hunter of monsters. There is a lot of tradition in joining the Order of St. George. Being a part of this secret order is not easy; it requires lots of sacrifices. There are so many different levels within the order. They have a long history and many dedicated members serving many different roles, all vital to the Order. This write-up is done in prose. The art fits perfectly with the story being told. It does go on too long, but it does deliver a lot of information that is good to know if you are reading the regular comic book series. Most of this book is taken up by prose writing. A little more story art as an actual comic book would have made this better, and more time spent on Maxine.
We see Maxine considering her life and what to do next. She has decided on a path that is full of hardship and one she may not survive. Her new life is starting.
A young woman is training with the House of Butcher. She is from the House of Slaughter. Louis Buocher is watching over her. This book changes to a prose style as it informs you about monsters. The artwork accompanying the writing has an old-style feel that looks amazing. It switches back and forth for the style. You do learn a fair amount about each type of monster.
The young woman learns that reading a book does help one to learn. She is there to learn how to kill monsters. Her trainer, Louis, is strange, yet what he does and says does make sense. Her name is Maxine.
Maxine may not think she is learning a lot,ot yet it is easy to see she is. What she learns may not be about killing monsters but also about monsters and people. Louis is a rough guy and not very polite, yet he does know what a person needs to know.
The prose part of this book does drag on. The parts done as a regular comic with Louis and Maxine have some nice interaction between them. Both are ones you will feel compelled to learn more about.
One new thing about the monsters is revealed here.
Maxine Slaughter is in a bad part of town with George Cutter training her. What he wants her to do is not nice.
This book delivers some history on the Houses. It is good to know more about them. These Houses have been around a long time.
Maxine has a conversation with Albi, and he is obviously high up in the House of Cutter. He and Maxine are having a chat about what Maxine needs to learn or should learn. Albie knows many things yet says little. He does mention Cecilia Slaughter is coming to visit.
Cecelia wants power. She wants to be a Dragon. She does have the drive and willpower to accomplish this. Her dreams are big. Her insanity is mentioned but not shown here.
Albie and Cecilia make a deal about the future of the House of Slaughter, and the deal involves one Erica Slaughter, who may or may not be dead.
So Maxine is taking Erica’s place. She does seem like a fitting replacement. Her life is just starting, and it is going to be dangerous, exciting, and so very interesting.
The back of this book is packed full of gorgeous covers with Maxine Slaughter featured. She is cute and lovely and has an atmosphere of deadly danger about her.
