This week, I will review issue one of “The Madcaps” from Philbo Publishing, the first part of a trilogy inspired by a real Dungeons & Dragons homebrew campaign.
The story introduces four friends—a sharp intellectual, a devout farmer, a kind-hearted charlatan, and a social connector—who reunite in their hometown of Ivywood. Their gathering is soon disrupted by a local “undead outbreak” and a mysterious drug problem with dark consequences. From the start, the series evokes nostalgia with its medieval themes and emphasizes character development, as writer Ray Jamison explores the main characters’ relationships and natural dialogue. It has a distinct 90s Grindhouse vibe that adds charm and highlights their friendship within a fantasy world. The action scenes, however, are intense and lively, brought to life through Evan Quiring’s excellent artwork, enhanced by Dan Kemp’s coloring, creating a cohesive visual experience that will engage readers. While “The Madcaps” might seem like just another medieval story, Jamison’s clever writing, combined with Quiring’s stylish indie art, makes it a series that D&D fans will enjoy—a notable addition to the fantasy genre.
