This week, I will review issue number one of “Red Roots” from Image Comics. Debuting from artist Lorenzo De Felici (“Void Rivals”), this series explores the horror genre by telling the story of a professional killer and a high school teacher whose lives are intertwined by a terrifying, mysterious force.

The story begins with a cold, calculated killer on a brutal, action-filled spree, noted for minimal dialogue and a visceral, gritty atmosphere. It then shifts to a quiet high school teacher living alone with her two cats. When she returns home, she finds a severed, decaying head in her wardrobe, raising questions about how it got there without signs of forced entry, suggesting a supernatural force acting beyond normal physical boundaries. De Felici’s artwork effectively captures the dark, gritty tone, especially after diverging from the sci-fi themes of “Void Rivals.” His writing stands out for its brilliant juxtaposition, offering insights into both the teacher’s and killer’s perspectives, creating a captivating yet cunning mystery that leaves many questions unanswered. The shocking, surprising cliffhanger at the end hints that De Felici has learned from his collaborator, Robert Kirkman, about taking readers on a horrifying journey with an ending that leaves them eager to see what happens next. “Red Roots” is a striking debut that combines depth with gritty, fast-paced storytelling, using minimal dialogue to enhance action scenes brilliantly. Thanks to its unique setting, this is a series no one should miss.
