The “Grips” franchise is revitalized through this remastered edition of the 1986 series by Kris Silver and Tim Vigil. Producer Everett Hardsoe acquired the rights from Silver in 2025, giving new life to this classic. If Vigil’s name rings a bell, it’s likely because he’s also famous for his series “Faust,” featuring a vigilante who’s a mix of Batman and Wolverine. In fact, Silver must have taken inspiration from “Faust” to create “Grips,” a character who’s more like a blend of Wolverine and The Punisher. His real name is Martin Kane, an ultra-violent vigilante based in Sacramento, California, who believes that criminals deserve no mercy. He spends his nights fiercely fighting street gangs, drug rings, and sex traffickers, armed with custom blades. Although the series made a big splash in 1986, it doesn’t quite hold up today, partly because of its exaggerated Grindhouse style and Silver’s focus on intense, pseudo-violent action. Still, this remastered edition successfully captures a vibrant tone and maintains its extreme edge. Vigil’s artwork, which retains the gritty tone he established in “Faust,” offers an intense and slightly more brutal take on Neal Adams’ style, adding a unique charm to the series. While Silver tries to keep the story moving, much of it feels a bit slow, often bogged down with lengthy exposition, especially with scenes showing Grips’ detailed hero work versus his artistic pursuits, which sometimes seem like filler. Nevertheless, Silver and Vigil’s collaboration results in a cult classic, breathing new life into the Razorverse mythology—whether for better or worse.
