This week, I will review issue one of “Amazing Universe Presents Cybermancy: Haunted,” from Enemy One Entertainment.
Marketed as an Action-Horror Urban Fantasy, it centers on Trainee mage Shawn Evans, who faces a terrifying final exam at the gothic Vanlion Estate, a dark but beautiful mansion in Vermont corrupted by century-old blood magic. Guided by his mentor, Wayne Morgan, Shawn must apply his Cybermancy training—an organization blending technology and mysticism—to survive encounters with ghouls and demons. The story combines supernatural elements with horror, creating an engaging world-building narrative. While it has a Doctor Strange-like vibe, the soundtrack—featuring songs like N.W.A.’s “Straight Outta Compton,” Lupe Fiasco’s “Kick, Push,” Rage Against the Machine’s “Fistful of Steel,” and Lauryn Hill’s “X-Factor”—adds authenticity and modern-day flavor that readers will enjoy. Despite the story’s brief twelve pages and rapid pace, Robert Jeffery II skillfully develops Shawn and Wayne’s characters, emphasizing their dynamic and realistic tension. At the same time, Matteo Illuminati’s artwork offers a clean style where the horror themes are exaggerated to their fullest, which are complemented by Arianna Pisani’s muted, murky coloring. Overall, the series presents a fresh concept, though some tropes feel overused, and the quick pacing limits deeper exploration. Still, Jeffery II and Illuminati deliver strong performances. ‘Cybermancy: Haunted’ succeeds with its hip-hop-inspired spell casting and suspense, but ultimately falls short in fully developing the plot to make the cybernetic magic feel truly innovative.
Well, that’s it for me. Thanks for sticking around, and I look forward to seeing you all next time.
