First Look Into Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft

The world of Azeroth welcomes you, fellow adventurer! It is time to plan your approach to taking down the Lich King, research the factions best suited to your character, and explore new experiences along the way. Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft has fans excited with an expansion of new items, dungeons, creatures, and spells. But the hottest talking point is definitely the classes and species. Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft releases Tuesday, November 17, with Master Tier early access starting November 3. That’s plenty of time to create a rough draft for some character and party ideas!

Our goal was to present every option that is available in the MMO as a character option in D&D. – James Wyatt (Principal Game Designer, Project Lead Designer)

Straight from the MMO to the tabletop, each dungeon pits players against an epic boss encounter.  7 Dungeons draw inspiration from the classic, iconic World of Warcraft (WoW) era. These include:

  • Azjol-Nerub
  • Blackfathom Deeps
  • Deadmines
  • Dire Maul
  • Onyxia’s Lair
  • Scarlet Monastery
  • Shadowfang Keep

The Character Classes go beyond classic D&D classes and feel unique, highlighting their combat role; for example, with the Hero Class, Death Knight, instead of an ability like Lay on Hands, the class has Level 1 Death Coil, which drains negative energy and turns its creature type into Undead, using d8s to fuel the ability. Other Hero Classes mentioned are Demon Hunter (Class: Ranger) and Evoker (Sorcerer). World of Warcraft Classes include:

  • Death Knight: Straddling the line between life and death, death knights emphasize debilitating curses and sinister magic.
  • Demon Hunter: Demon hunters are haunted outcasts who wield fel magic.
  • Druid: Druids are shape-shifters with an affinity for plants, animals, and nature magic.
  • Evoker: Evokers unleash devastating draconic spells on enemies and healing magic on allies.
  • Hunter: Hunters are at home in the wilderness and have a special connection with beasts. Hunters rely on weaponry and pets to deal damage.
  • Mage: Mages are magic-users who learn their craft through intense research and study. They wield a potent array of offensive and defensive spells.
  • Monk: Monks are known for their hand-to-hand fighting skills, including unarmed combat.
  • Paladin: Paladins are heavily armored defenders whose holy magic heals wounds and combats evil.
  • Priest: Priests express their faith by serving people as healers and champions.
  • Rogue: Rogues sneak around enemies and attack while hiding to finish foes quickly.
  • Shaman: Shamans wield elemental magic against their foes.
  • Warlock: Warlocks wield demonic magic, including summoned demons, to curse and immolate foes.
  • Warrior: Heavily armored fighters who strive for combat perfection.

* If a class a player wants to use is not available, the original Dungeons & Dragons classes can still be used. D&D Beyond also fully supports Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft character creation and character sheet customization.

The expansion includes every WoW species, including Krokul and Taunka, plus additional cosmetic options. 11 new Species, iconic and unmistakable to the universe of World of Warcraft:

  • Dracthyr
  • Draenei
  • Earthen
  • Forsaken
  • Haranir
  • Mechagnome
  • Pandaren
  • Tauren
  • Troll
  • Vulpera
  • Worgen
  • Plus Dwarf, Elf, Goblin, Human, and Orc.

Players can mix and match themes in many ways in this expansion, including Alliance vs. Horde, the Burning Legion, the Scourge, the Old Gods & Void Lords, the Elemental Lords, and the Dragonflights.

Professions and Gear add more customization and heart to player characters. Dungeons & Dragons: World of Warcraft offers a variety of options that go beyond a player’s character class and origin. Gathering and Production professions are broken down into proficiency levels and can be leveled throughout a campaign. Gathering includes: Archaeology, Fishing, Herbalism, and Mining. Production includes Crafting, Alchemy, Blacksmithing, Enchanting, Cooking, Inscription, and Engineering.
