FANTASTIC COMIC FAN: Time to Revisit the Legion

I have been a long-time fan of the Legion of Superheroes, and there was a time when it was one of the top-selling titles at DC. Unfortunately, the Legion has been mothballed in the closet of the DC mythos for a long time. It’s been a long time since it was a series that fans looked forward to each month.

Truthfully, since the Rebirth initiative years ago, DC hasn’t quite known what to do with the group, which has been around since the dawn of the Silver Age. Sure, DC has dipped its toes into the Legion mythos a few times over the past few years, but nothing has really stuck with fans. Things might be looking up for the Legion, though. With the Dark Legion over in Superman and the adventures of Superboy in Action, where the Legion might eventually reappear, maybe DC has finally found a way to bring the Legion back into the spotlight.

The Legion has faced numerous challenges for many years. Well, decades, actually. First, its continuity has had more than its share of retcons and reboots. And, granted, the vast history and lore might have made it hard for fans to get into anything Legion. But I think that deep dive into all things Legion isn’t all that hard to grasp. If today’s fans can keep up with all the meta things going on in and around the DC mytho, the Legion isn’t all that hard.

One of the things I liked about the original Legion is that things actually happened. The Legion grew into adulthood, married, had children, and some even died. The Legion mythos was never stagnant, and things didn’t start to get wonky until DC began imposing mandates and rules that hampered the Legion for many years.

For newer fans and even die-hard fans, there are plenty of arcs to get into the Legion, but the Great Darkness Saga is a fantastic starting point. You do get thrown into the middle of things, but that’s pretty much it with the Legion. But, even for new fans, it isn’t hard to get to know the various Legion members and the DC of the future.

The Great Darkness Saga remains a landmark in DC Comics lore and a cornerstone of Legion of Superheroes storytelling. First published in 1982, this epic—penned by Paul Levitz and illustrated by Keith Giffen—masterfully weaves cosmic grandeur, suspense, and heartfelt drama into a tale whose impact continues to echo through the decades.

Things start slow, which is actually a good thing. You get a chance to understand what makes the Legion such an essential part of the DC mythos. The suspense unfolds slowly, as mysterious assaults and eerie resurrections signal the emergence of a formidable menace. That menace is eventually unveiled as Darkseid—the godlike despot from Jack Kirby’s Fourth World—whose intrusion into the Legion’s distant future is both startling and ominous. Through his control of the Servants of Darkness and his devastating campaign against the United Planets, the narrative escalates into a full-blown cosmic crisis.

What elevates The Great Darkness Saga beyond its epic scope is the deft balance Levitz and Giffen strike between cosmic spectacle and intimate character work. Despite the Legion’s sprawling lineup, the creative team ensures that central figures like Mon-El, Saturn Girl, and Lightning Lad each have standout moments that highlight their evolution and inner strength. The narrative also enriches the broader DC mythos, seamlessly connecting the grandeur of the New Gods with the hopeful vision of the Legion’s futuristic world.

Giffen’s artwork, with its brooding compositions and shadow-laden panels, infuses the narrative with a palpable sense of menace that perfectly complements its foreboding atmosphere. His portrayal of Darkseid is unforgettable—towering, terrifying, and mythic in scale. The visuals heighten the saga’s tension and grandeur, transforming it into a truly epic experience.

For seasoned Legion enthusiasts, this storyline marks a pinnacle—richly rewarding those who know the team’s intricate relationships and storied past. Yet for newcomers, it serves as a thrilling gateway into the vast scale and narrative ambition that defines Legion of Superheroes. More than a clash with cosmic evil, it’s a profound exploration of legacy, power, and the enduring strength of hope when faced with overwhelming darkness.

Simply put, The Great Darkness Saga is a cornerstone of DC’s cosmic canon. It’s a masterclass in serialized storytelling, with echoes that continue to shape how both the Legion and Darkseid are portrayed in modern comics.
