DC Comics has officially revealed that the critically acclaimed creative team of writer Deniz Camp and artist Javier Rodríguez will reunite for Shadow of the Bat, one of the flagship titles in the publisher’s ambitious DC Next Level initiative. The announcement was made during the Gotham panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, confirming months of speculation surrounding the mysterious Batman project.
Fresh off their Eisner-nominated collaboration on Absolute Martian Manhunter, Camp and Rodríguez are bringing their unique blend of cerebral storytelling and breathtaking visual experimentation to Gotham City. Their previous work earned widespread praise for its innovative approach to superhero comics, making Shadow of the Bat one of DC’s most anticipated new ongoing series.
Unlike a traditional Batman title focused solely on the Dark Knight’s latest battle against familiar rogues, Shadow of the Bat promises to examine the lasting consequences of living in Gotham. The series begins with a catastrophic explosion at the abandoned Ace Chemicals plant, the infamous site of the Joker’s origin. The blast unleashes a wave of psychogenic chemicals across the city, creating new threats while exposing the emotional and psychological scars Gotham’s citizens have accumulated after years of super-powered violence.
During the Comic-Con panel, Camp described the book as an exploration of institutional failure and collective trauma. Rather than simply asking how Batman defeats the next villain, Shadow of the Bat examines what happens to ordinary people forced to rebuild after one disaster follows another. The series will exist firmly within DC continuity, running alongside Matt Fraction’s Batman and Tom Taylor’s Detective Comics. Instead of replacing the existing Gotham books, Shadow of the Bat will complement them by telling stories from a different perspective, expanding the mythology of Gotham while introducing an entirely new generation of characters and villains shaped by the city’s endless cycle of tragedy.
