The return of The Demon was officially announced during DC’s Next Level panel at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, where the publisher unveiled the latest additions to its creator-driven initiative. The biggest surprise was the reveal that acclaimed creator James Harren will both write and illustrate the new series, bringing his distinctive style to Jack Kirby’s legendary supernatural antihero. The new ongoing series is scheduled to launch in October 2026 as part of DC’s expanding Next Level publishing line.
Harren is best known for his creator-owned hit Ultramega, along with acclaimed work on B.P.R.D. and Rumble, where he earned a reputation for kinetic action, grotesque creature designs, and cinematic storytelling. His blend of horror, fantasy, and explosive visuals makes him an ideal choice to tackle the saga of Jason Blood and Etrigan, a character that has always straddled the line between superhero adventure and supernatural horror.
During the San Diego Comic-Con panel, DC described the new series as a fresh starting point for both longtime fans and new readers. The story follows a broken Jason Blood as he confronts a world secretly overrun by demonic creatures while struggling with the terrifying entity bound to his soul. The series will feature colors by Dave Stewart and lettering by Clayton Cowles, with variant covers by Daniel Warren Johnson, Michael Walsh, Hayden Sherman, and John McCrea. The debut issue is scheduled to arrive in comic shops on October 7, 2026.
Scott Snyder previously explained that the goal behind the project was to give readers a horror comic that requires no previous knowledge of Etrigan while remaining true to the character’s mythology. Snyder also revealed that Harren specifically chose The Demon as the project he wanted to create for DC, making this one of the most anticipated books in the Next Level initiative.
