DECODED is a mesmerizing journey through time and space, told through the fusion of lush art and compelling storytelling. This graphic novel seamlessly blends ancient Egyptian history and Afro-Futurism, creating an immersive story that will captivate fans of science fiction, comics, culture, and art alike.
When Delancey, an ambitious archaeology professor, uncovers the ancient scrolls of Imhotep deep in the sands of Egypt, he is stunned to discover that they contain the long-lost secrets of time travel. With this newfound power, Delancey sets out to rewrite history in his own image, erasing the contributions of Black people from the annals of time. But little does he know, a young Black woman, armed with the knowledge of her ancestors, is determined to stop him before it’s too late. Along the way, she uncovers a life-changing secret about her own identity.
DECODED is the culmination of a decades-long passion project for Alan Mitchell and Jonathan Akwue, two pioneering Black British comic creators. First imagined over 25 years ago, the graphic novel was originally serialized in an independent UK magazine as “The Scrolls of Imhotep.” Though it gained a devoted following, the story was never fully realized.
In 2016, Alan and Jonathan reunited to brainstorm a new approach to completing the story. Tragically, Alan passed away before they could bring the project to fruition. To honor Alan’s legacy, Jonathan assembled a talented new team and partnered with Disrupt Space, a Black contemporary arts agency dedicated to representing rising visual artists. Together, they brought DECODED to life, not only as a gripping graphic novel, but also as a stunning art book, featuring works by acclaimed artists like Isis Raheem, Aries The Artist, Rudi Okasili-Henry and many more.
