Marvel’s most popular hero is reaching a legacy numbering milestone—issue #1,000!
SPIDEY CELEBRATING #1,000!
One of the great things about legacy numbering is that fans get to enjoy special issue celebrations. The big one coming soon is that Spider-Man is only a few issues away from big book #1,000! (The “actual” issue number will be #36.)
It’s going to be a landmark celebration indeed, with quite a stellar line-up! In fact, the House of Ideas is calling this “The biggest issue in Spider-History.” It will hit your LCS on Wednesday, September 16. Writers will include Joe Kelly, Noah Hawley, Frank Miller, Dan Slott, J. M. Demattis, and Brian Michael Bendis. Artists will include Pepe Larraz, John Romita Jr., Patrick Gleason, Peach Momoko, Marcos Martin, Stuart Immonen, and Paulo Rivera.
A new villain, Ravage, will be introduced in this issue. Marvel is calling it “a giant-sized spectacular.”
Here’s the description from marvel.com: “Spider-Man faces his greatest fear and his most frightening new villain in decades. Who is this Ravage? And how will his history-shattering power force Peter to question his very legacy? It’s one of Spider-Man’s most personal battles to date, and one that will shape his path for the next 1,000 issues.”
Kelly said in the same news release: “It’s a true honor to have the opportunity to contribute to Spidey’s legacy with a huge milestone like this! And we get to introduce a new villain?! Amazing! Ravage is layered and complex and mysterious, and I can’t wait to unleash him on the readers in this monumental issue!”
2026 IS TURNING OUT BIG FOR SPIDEY
Spider-Man has been enjoying a landmark year for Peter Parker!
One of the biggest events was his teaming up with Superman from DC, and boy, did those books sell! Of course, this was reminiscent of that famous initial team—up from decades ago.
As I previously mentioned, Spider-Man has been Marvel’s “top gun,” as it were, for quite a while now. In the House of Ideas, he’s been a popular guy when it comes to team-ups, most famously working with Deadpool, Wolverine, and the FF, among others.
THE SPIDEY/SUPERMAN TEAM–UP WAS A STUDY IN CONTRASTS
While there are certainly similarities between Superman and Spider-Man, the differences are what stand out most to me.
Superman (and most DC characters, honestly) are more iconic and confident while Spidey is still trying to figure out what he wants to be when he grows up. I thought pairing up Clark and Peter I. Their newspaper roles showed how they worked well together. Opposites attract, as they say.
Spidey is more the wisecracking, jovial kind of guy while Superman takes things more seriously. Both characters have been married, with Clark still hitched to Lois. Peter was married to MJ, at least for a while before Mephisto stepped in. I still think Peter should be married to MJ, by the way!
NOW WHAT?
Of course, a new villain may be just what Spider-Man needs right now!
I always wonder how much of a challenge it is to write a hero who has been around for as many decades as Spider-Man (or an other character) has been. You don’t want to repeat things, but you also have to find new and creative ways to vex the guy.
I mean, for a long time, Spidey prided himself on being a loner. However, he’s been involved with the FF and The Avengers in recent years. He also was the main character in the Marvel Team–Up monthly title, so he has had experience working with other Marvel stars.
I remember when he briefly owned a company and was more like Bruce Wayne. That sure didn’t last long, thankfully!
But what adventures can Spidey embark on now? I’m curious just what the House of Ideas has in store for him!
