I have to say that this year’s “Batman Day” event will be difficult to match in the years ahead!
WHAT’S THE DEAL?
Saturday, September 19, was once again “Batman Day” around the world. What is this event? It’s described as “a global, multi-platform event that invites fans of all ages to visit their local comics shop, discover new stories, and share their passion for DC’s Caped Crusader together.”
As a long time Batman fan, I’ve appreciated “Batman Day” ever since it began a few years ago. The big “Bat-guy” has been carrying DC around on his shoulders for a few decades now, and the more attention he gets, the better it is for the “Distinguished Competition,” as the House of Ideas has described it.
Several important things took place that week, and that included four unique Batman masks (each one in a unique style, including Jorge Jinemez, Nick Dragotta, Jim Lee, and Frank Miller) and five new hardcovers (Batman Vol. 1: Daylight, Batman ’89, Batman: H2SH Volume One, Batman: The Dark Knight Returns Deluxe Edition, and the Deluxe Edition of Batman: Gargoyle of Gotham). There is also DC’s digital comics platform that will offer a curated collection of free-to-read Batman comics (including Absolute Batman #1-3 and the complete Batman: Wayne Family Adventures) and DCU working with WB Games to offer their members free Batcave Props in LEGO’s Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight.
“That’s the fun of Batman Day,” said Snyder in a news release from DC. “It’s a chance to celebrate this character, spend time with other fans, and talk about the ways Batman has meant something in your own life.”
‘BATMAN OF TWO WORLDS’
Of course, I’ve left out what to me is THE biggest thing of 2026 “Batman Day,” and that was what is described as “Two Iconic Worlds. One Historic Event.”
I mean, we ALL knew this had to happen. Batman just HAD to have something to do with his Absolute version, and what we’re seeing is how each Batman would handle a similar problem.
“Without giving too much away,” said Scott Snyder from Absolute Batman in that same news release, “both stories are about theft, what theft means in one world versus the other, and what Batman’s form of justice looks like in each. That was the guiding principle that gave us the opportunity to tell two stories that celebrate each interpretation.”
“At the heart of it, it’s really simple,” said Matt Fraction, writer of the ongoing Batman title. “One problem, two solutions. Each version of Batman has his own way of working and his own solution to that problem. The fun was putting them side by side so you can see the similarities, the differences, and the unique flavor and texture of each world.”
In other words, we got to see just how these two heroes actually compare when confronted with the same problem.
I don’t know about you, but given Absolute Batman’s influence on the comics industry and the Dark Knight himself, THIS is what I was panting heavily about! I NEEDED to get this book. All I can say is, I don’t think any store could order this thing too heavily!
What really tickled me was to see the cover of the collected edition of Batman Vol. 1: Daylight that is actually an homage of that now-famous cover for Absolute Batman #1. That is turning out to be one of the most homaged covers of the year, if not the decade!
PAST EVENTS WERE FUN, ALL RIGHT
On some levels, previous “Batman Day” events were a lot of fun, with a Free Comic Book Day-like atmosphere full of free giveaways and the like. We’ve seen masks before, and I’ve found some Batman comics make a return to the stands to help promote the Dark Knight.
Of course, Batman outfits will rule on this day, so I would look for your local comics shop to do their best to get some great cosplayer to wear not only Batman’s outfit, but also resemble as many members of the Batman family as possible. That will be fun to see! (I can’t wear any cosplay outfit because, as I like to point out, I’m just too “jolly” to be poured into any of those skin-tight costumes.)
I expected contests and cookies galore depending on the store itself. Given Batman’s recent popularity, this indeed was one of the biggest and best “Batman Day” events ever!
THE DIFFERENT BATMEN
As always, I can’t help but think about the many and varied versions of the Caped Crusader that have been so popular with us fans. Kevin Conroy (the undisputed voice of Batman), Adam West, Val Kilmer, Michael Keaton, Christian Bale, Ben Affleck (my person favorite live-action actor), and, oh yeah, Robert Pattinson (who looks more like Nightwing than Batman to me). George Clooney is in there someplace, too, but he’s never been the “real” Batman to me.
And yet, they all have their devoted followings! Adam West is often referred to as the Bright Knight instead of the Dark Knight by his fans. But when Batman speaks in the comics, it is Kevin Conroy’s voice I hear in my head. I hope that never goes away!
A word of advice regarding “Batman Day”—I would find the closest local comics shops near you and maybe call ahead to see if they still have any copies of Batman of Two Worlds comic, if possible. They may not, but they just might, especially if you are a new customer. They’d love you to sign up for their pull lists eventually, so they just might treat you right to make that happen.
