The Voice Said Kill immediately gave me a Nine Bodies in a Mexican Morgue (created by Anthony Horowitz) vibe.

The storyline by Simon Purifier is different, but the mood—and certainly the art by Vanesa Del Rey—took my mind back to that quirky, dark TV miniseries.

That brings me to Del Rey’s art. I often note that art is very much something everyone looks at differently, and this effort will not be for everyone. Personally, I liked it, but I will admit that some panels became a bit too difficult to decipher. At the same time, I recognize that there is an element of the characters’ minds being impaired by “shrooms,” and the art reflects that altered state.

Story-wise, I was left wondering whether the “very pregnant” wildlife cop could endure what she faced without experiencing more problems than she did. But that may just be me underestimating her.

This is not a top-shelf story, and it is probably too dark for a breezy summer read. But if you’re looking for a taste of something darker that reads quickly, with the unsettling feeling that this is a story that could very likely happen, The Voice Said Kill is a good pick.
