The Marigold

The Marigold by Andrew F. Sullivan is a wild ride into an imagination that has created a story reminiscent of a zombie tale, with a twist of dark magic, that ultimately becomes something refreshingly different.
That sounds like The Marigold might rate quite highly, but at times it felt as though Sullivan was trying too hard to be deeply philosophical. Frankly, I became disinterested at some points, or perhaps I simply couldn’t keep up. Either way, it became a drag on my enjoyment of the book.
So, what exactly is The Marigold about?
Well, a stop by ECW Press gives you this synopsis:
“In a near-future Toronto buffeted by environmental chaos and unfettered development, an unsettling new lifeform begins to grow beneath the surface, feeding off the past.
“The Marigold, a gleaming Toronto condo tower, sits a half-empty promise: a stack of scuffed rental suites and undelivered amenities that crumbles around its residents as a mysterious sludge spreads slowly through it. Public health inspector Cathy Jin investigates this toxic mold as it infests the city’s infrastructure, rotting it from within, while Sam ‘Soda’ Dalipagic stumbles onto a dangerous cache of data while cruising the streets in his Camry, waiting for his next ride-share alert. On the outskirts of downtown, 13-year-old Henrietta Brakes chases a friend deep underground after he’s snatched into a sinkhole by a creature from below.”
Seemingly disparate in nature, Sullivan weaves these different storylines into a rather dark tapestry. While pushing the realm of believability, the story still resonates as just a bit too plausible when it comes to corporate greed, old magic, and nature rebelling.
I’ll also add that I enjoy Canadian books in part because of the little nuggets that are distinctly from this side of the 49th parallel.
Sullivan certainly provides those. The book is based in Toronto, there’s a mention of a family member who doesn’t like the Toronto Blue Jays (even with their current struggles, I remain a staunch fan), and someone is raising Lacombe swine, the only breed of pig originating in Canada.
Overall, The Marigold is a ride from a Canadian author that’s well worth taking.
