Kansas City, Mo. (April 29, 2025) – The Born Loser, featuring the daily trials and tribulations of the lovable loser Brutus Thornapple, his family, coworkers, and neighbors, celebrates 60 years in syndication May 10, 2025. A fan favorite, The Born Loser examines the foibles and follies of everyday life, resonating with and delighting readers through its timeless, universal appeal.
Created by Art Sansom in 1965 and continued by his son, Chip, first as an apprentice and then taking over upon Art’s death in 1991, The Born Loser appears in more than 500 newspapers throughout the world and on the newly revamped GoComics. The strip is a two-time winner of the National Cartoonists Society’s Best Humor Strip of the Year Award and has been nominated numerous times as well.
“I am thrilled to be celebrating The Born Loser’s60th Anniversary on May 10, 2025!,” said Chip. “It is very gratifying that the comic strip my father, Art Sansom, launched in 1965, has remained popular to this day with readers, young and old, around the world. That is a testament to the great characters and timeless, universal premise Dad created. Brutus Thornapple is a contemporary Everyman, who each day faces the typical trials and tribulations we all do. Except he is the one who slips on the banana peels for us, so that instead of taking the fall we can laugh those situations off. I am proud that, for the past thirty- four years since my dad passed away, I have been able to carry on with The Born Loser in the style he taught me during a 14 year apprenticeship. As a tribute to him, I still sign both of our names to every comic strip, as he did when we worked together. Happy Anniversary, Dad!”
To celebrate, Andrews McMeel Syndication will run a set of anniversary strips personally selected by Chip the week of May 5.
