Over the last fifteen years, games that feature superheroes have shifted away from uninspired tie-in games, with lackluster playability, to some of the best-acclaimed experiences in the history of video games.
Game studios are starting to emerge that respect the properties they are adapting into games, and are producing highly playable experiences. Titles such as Batman: Arkham and the Spider-Man games from Marvel have successfully shown the world that video games can make consoles equal to or on par with cinema in the realm of storytelling.
Gotham’s Dark Knight and the Arkham Revolution
When Rocksteady Studios released Batman: Arkham Asylum in 2009, it would have been impossible to predict what it would do for superhero gaming.
Historically, licensed games, or games based on characters and stories from comic books or films, couldn’t (due to gameplay mechanics and style) capture the actual appeal of those same stories and heroes. Arkham Asylum flips this notion by making an original Batman game that takes into account comic storytelling, gameplay flow, and the design of stealth sequences.
The series followed up with Batman: Arkham City, then Batman: Arkham Knight, which took those limits even further. Arkham City not only opened up the larger city of Gotham into a sprawling open-world playground, but also fashioned a more carefully crafted mission structure around the open space. Arkham Knight also introduced the Batmobile, which certainly divided players, but was, nonetheless, a risky choice in an overall ambitious project. Also, the free-flow combat during all three games became iconic and has since inspired other action games. The Arkham games were unabashed beat ’em ups, but they effectively captured the psychology of Batman and allowed players to understand the feeling of the cowl.
These games influenced even more than just consoles. Batman became a key character in cross-media, inspiring not just merchandise but themed experiences in other industries. Online casinos, for instance, have leveraged this fandom by creating Batman-themed slot machines that can be played even with the popular systems of online casino bonuses that are acclaimed by casino fans. It demonstrates how the character’s reach spans across entertainment, where even casino gaming finds value in the mythology of Gotham.
Swinging into Marvel’s Universe with Spider-Man
If Batman is the best superhero game of the first decade of the 2000s, then Spider-Man is the best superhero game of the 2010s. Released in 2018, Marvel’s Spider-Man cashes in on quickness, fluidity, enjoyable gameplay, and fun web-slinging mechanics. Players are not just fighting enemies like Doctor Octopus, but also experiencing the dilemmas of being Peter Parker.
Spider-Man: Miles Morales lets players live through the lens of the younger hero maturing while reconciling his powers and role as a hero. Fast forward to 2023, and Marvel’s Spider-Man 2 had both Peter and Miles on a blockbuster-level experience specifically concerning superhero games. With fluid traversal, weighty emotional storytelling, and a cinematic feel, it also quickly rated as one of the best experiences of the decade.
The reason the Spider-Man games are unique is that they are very approachable. Players of all skill levels can experience the thrill of swinging about Manhattan, while long-time fans can discover small nods to decades of comic book lore and have their ‘thank you’ feel directed at players of various familiarity with the Marvel universe, from the hardcore die-hards to casual Marvel fans.
Expanding the Universe: X-Men Origins and Injustice
The superhero game genre receives its main influence from Batman and Spider-Man, yet other franchises have made substantial contributions to its development. The 2009 action-adventure video game X-Men Origins: Wolverine serves as an example of how the film adaptation of the same name became a game.
Players were stunned by this surprise title’s visceral brutality compared to the usual gameplay from movie tie-ins. Most movie tie-ins fell short because they had to be produced in a rush, but X-Men Origins: Wolverine leaned fully into Wolverine’s savagery. It was something players were hoping for, and the gameplay was outrageously violent indeed.
On another battle front, Injustice 2 pioneered competitive fighting for superheroes. Made by NetherRealm Studios, players could pit classic DC heroes and villains against one another in battle. Injustice 2 stood apart from its contemporaries with polished mechanics and a bold story about Superman going tyrannical. The depth of its narrative placed it outside of a traditional fighter, giving comic readers a lot to discuss while also giving gamers hours of strategic battles.
