Philadelphia, PA – May 18, 2024 – On its 23rd anniversary, The East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention (ECBACC), which sponsors Philadelphia’s premiere Black comic book convention, will celebrate the myriad worlds of quantum sci-fi & superheroes. This year, on Saturday, May 18, 2024, ECBACC Philly returns to The Temple University Student Faculty Center / 3340 N. ECBACC, founded by Philly Ambassador Mr. Yumy Odom, is a pioneering initiative, giving Black heroes, super-powered characters, their creators, and fans a voice in the comic book industry.

Philadelphia aka “The City of Firsts” has long been recognized as a place that has provided fertile ground for a number of artistic efforts, including music, dance, mural-making, storytelling and comic book creation. In fact, brothers Orrin and George Evans created the first Black comic book in Philadelphia in 1947: All-Negro Comics #1. ECBACC, the first full-service Comic Book Convention and the model for community-based comic book conventions, diversi-cons and ethno-cons, has successfully cultivated balanced images of Africana [Black] superheroes, and has served as a nexus, conduit and catalyst for Black comic book creators, their colleagues and fans since 2002. For the past 23 years, ECBACC has paid tribute to this important legacy, promoted the work of veteran as well as up-and-coming artists, and served as a wellspring of collaborative efforts among comic book creators.

On tap for Saturday, May 18th: The Kids’ Library Zone and the Superhero Learning Zone, which will feature comic book-themed activities open to all young people who attend the Convention and offer children a chance to learn arts & crafts, music, storytelling and how to take their own ideas and create superheroes and comic books; ECBACC Professional Workshops and Panels; an ECBACC Marketplace; and AfriCoz / AfriCoz Kids costume and cosplay contests for adults and youth, respectively, celebrating Black Age and Africana characters in comic books, sci-fi, fantasy and film.
