Spotlight on Tillie Walden x Lee Lai
This talk was moderated by Hazel Newlevant, but she arrived a bit late, and Tillie and Lee had already started chatting. They spoke about using a pen versus a brush for cartooning, the spark for their latest book, whether they had mentors, and their thoughts on feedback and how they like it (or don’t).
They also discussed their process of developing a story before sending it to an editor, their love of grid layouts, and writing scripts. Other topics included using narration, integrating writing with art through body language, facial expressions, page design, and other ambient details.
The conversation also touched on drawing detailed panels, dealing with physical strain from drawing, favorite bits of information they discovered during research, the experience of being published as creators from minority backgrounds, fear and risk in creative work, the challenges of editing, and the difficulty of having to redraw large portions of their books.
