CANADA’S HERO: 50 YEARS OF CAPTAIN CANUCK
The first all-Canadian superhero burst to life on comic book pages in 1975. Before long, Captain Canuck comics were being sold in every province and territory across Canada. By issue #9, it had reached all 50 U.S. states, becoming the first full-color independently published comic book series distributed on the mass market throughout North America. Richard Comely (creator and artist of Captain Canuck) and Dainan Skeem (curator, BYU Library) discuss the history of the comic, with its ups and downs, including its strong connection to religion and the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. The conversation, moderated by Trevor Alvord (curator, BYU Library), will also touch on the BYU Library’s commemorative exhibit “Faith in God, Family, and Canada: 50 Years of Captain Canuck.”
