Comments: Antonia is a thirteen-year-old girl living in Cuba. She is happy, and through her, we get a glimpse into the lives of others around her. Eugenio is an art student with strong convictions. There is even love in the air for a young couple. Fidel Castro began to influence the country, taking control and making changes to the lives of those living there, and not for the better. Cuba becomes an island in turmoil. Life grows increasingly difficult, and if you are not supportive of Castro, it becomes even harder. Father Walsh and Mr. James Baker work together to help the children of Cuba. Through their efforts, you see just how much parents truly love their children. The people of Cuba who seek freedom in America have to fight for it. They endure so much, but at least they gain freedom and are no longer under Castro’s rule. The artwork effectively establishes the atmosphere. The characters are brought to life, complementing both the beauty and the sadness of the story being told. The raw emotion throughout the story stands out. As you read about the trials these people face, you feel joy in the moments of happiness they manage to find. The ending carries a powerful emotional impact. You feel the struggle these children endured and share in the joy of their survival and growth. They are the Pedro Pan survivors.
