Comments: First off, the reader is introduced to the main characters: Beckett Mariner, Bradward Boimler, D’Vana Tendi, and Samanthan Rutherford. These characters are fun, and each one stands out. Mariner, though, is the star.
The bridge crew is made up of both humans and aliens. They serve aboard the U.S.S. Cerritos, a California-class starship. This book gives you a look at the starship both inside and out.
The crew encounters many alien lifeforms. The art from the animated series beautifully showcases these aliens and their diversity. You are also treated to many different alien worlds and architectural designs.
The colors are bright and stand out. Some of the interior ship artwork is quite dark, making it hard to make out all the details.
The book does drag on a little. You get a look at the where and when, but only a small glimpse of the who.
There are a lot of starships shown here, not just the Cerritos. The interiors are lavishly illustrated, but they sometimes feel impersonal, as though no one actually inhabits them.
The art is beautiful throughout these pages, but without the animation and voice actors, you don’t get a full sense of the show. You will likely enjoy this book more if you are already a fan of the series. It is worth it for the visuals alone.
