Comments: Sgt. Flag has promised to marry Atomik Bombshell, and now he is looking for a way out, even though he truly loves her. This personal dilemma leads to a flashback of his father, Sgt. Mychael McFarlane, who is illustrated as a definitive soldier of action.
In the present, Sgt. Flag, Captain Battle, and Dan Hagan find themselves in a brawl with local villains. The three of them clearly enjoy the chaos; the issue is packed with high-paced action that is a blast to read. Between the fights, there is a beautiful pin-up page where Sgt. Flag contemplates his life. He realizes he actually has it pretty good: he enjoys his work, and his fiancée is both gorgeous and a powerhouse.
While this is a superhero comic with plenty of combat, the heart of the story is simply that it’s fun. It offers a rare look into Sgt. Flag’s personal life, framing his role as a superhero and soldier as a “job”, one he happens to be very good at. With a “bad-butt” attitude and a love for the fight, he isn’t afraid to go all out in battle.
The artwork does a fantastic job of illustrating these heroes in action and the villains they face. The story concludes with a pleasant surprise, reminding the reader that while these characters are heroes who risk their lives, they are also ordinary people just trying to find happiness.
