Comments: Christine and Inspector Dubert are getting along well, and there are even hints of a budding romance between them. The rat attack should have been frightening, yet it falls flat. If handled properly, this scene could have been genuinely terrifying and drawn the reader in. The story centres on a masked man who is killing female stage stars, yet he is rarely seen and is not much of a topic of discussion either. When deaths occur, there is little build-up or suspense. We need to learn more about the characters, as it is often difficult to distinguish one woman from another. The artwork makes it hard to discern details. While the women are portrayed as beautiful, that aspect is not fully realized on the page. The terror of the Phantom needs far more development; in fact, it needs to be established in the first place. This is a killer on the loose, yet the stage actors and actresses show little fear, which undermines the tension. The Phantom of the Opera is a classic tale of a madman, but here that feeling is missing. The Phantom simply does not appear enough to create the sense of menace the story requires.
