Comments: The story opens with Adam Jaeger in the hospital after being at a party. Then, all hell breaks loose, and the slaughter starts. Dozens of young people are slashed and ripped apart, but we can’t see what is causing the carnage. This invisible threat creates a brilliant mystery, keeping you on the edge of your seat, desperate to find out what is behind the sudden destruction and death.
Then you finally see it, and you will know fear.
As it turns out, Adam and his father both know exactly what is going on. The father uses his wealth to cover up the incident, while Adam seems entirely unsure of what to do. Both are burdened by the same dark secret, though neither comes right out and says it aloud. Instead, we watch Adam begin to process the aftermath, slowly coming to the horrifying realization that he is a monster.
The main characters are introduced beautifully, giving the reader just enough backstory to care about them. However, the narrative leaves how Adam became this way completely unexplained, adding a layer of lingering mystery to the plot.
There is a distinct Hammer Horror movie feel to the book, though with a much more modern dose of blood and guts on display. Because the story is just getting started, it leaves you incredibly eager to see how it unfolds. Will the father be able to protect his son? Will the son even let him? And how many more will have to die?
Adam is off to a fantastic start as a pitiful protagonist haunted by a terrible curse.
