Comments: Earl and Edith encounter Tweedle Dee and Tweedle Dumb, but the Tweedlers’ threats are largely ignored. They try to come across as menacing, yet they never truly feel threatening. Alice’s grandfather is simply evil, no ambiguity there. Evelyne, Alice’s daughter, is the complete opposite, coming across as kind and compassionate. Lorna, Alice’s sister, however, is just as cruel and manipulative as their father. There are so many conniving and sinister characters in this story that it’s hard not to feel for Alice. She’s surrounded by danger and deception at every turn. The big question becomes: what will happen to her? Familiar characters from Alice in Wonderland appear throughout, making them recognizable, but they are clearly altered versions of what we expect. Something strange is happening in Wonderland, and it seems they need Alice, or possibly her daughter, to return and deal with it. The Cheshire Cat, in particular, seems to have his own agenda. One of the standout elements is how Wonderland characters are mirrored by human counterparts in the real world. The Caterpillar is especially intriguing. He moves through the real world interacting with people, appearing calm and even friendly, yet there’s an underlying sense of control and manipulation. The artwork subtly reveals his true nature, even if the other characters don’t perceive it; this is a very effective visual touch. That said, this issue has very little actual plot progression, and there’s minimal character development, which is disappointing given the potential of the cast. However, it does serve as a setup, clearly pushing Alice toward an inevitable return to Wonderland, whether she wants to go or not.
