RICH INTERVIEWS: J. Michael Miller

First Comics News: What made you decide to become a writer?

J. Michael Miller: Since I was a kid, stories provided an escape from a world that sometimes can seem confusing or scary. Superheroes especially took over my attention. Heroes with the strength to change the world around them? That seems especially appealing to every kid–regardless of what era they’ve gotten to grow up in.

1st: What is the storyline in “Kid Cretaceous”

Michael: Kid Cretaceous is about a dad and daughter who move to a new city. On the way there, they get into a car wreck, and Kacey wishes her toy dinosaur could come to life and save them. It’s Toy Story meets superheroes.

1st: Is Ty Rex intelligent?

Michael: Ty Rex is intelligent because Kacey willed it. She wished her best friend, a toy dinosaur, could save them. He owes his consciousness to Kacey.

1st: Did you find a publisher for “Kid Cretaceous?”

Michael: Thanks to readers, supporters, and Kickstarter, I have been self-publishing my comics under Comics & Cosmos Ent.

1st: Who are a few of the supporting characters in “Kid Cretaceous” and why are they important?

Michael: The school counselor is an important supporting character. She was inspired by my beautiful wife, who is a therapist. She just passed the NCE and graduated from her Master’s program!) Without her, Kacey’s issues may have gone overlooked. Getting in a car accident with your father during a move is absolutely going to stir up feelings from

1st: Who is the main character in “The Healer’s Blade” and what makes readers like her?

Michael: Matilda is the main character in The Healer’s Blade. She is an agent of change doing good. Matilda was such a comfort movie when I was growing up, and so Roald Dahl’s character from the book/movie served as inspiration.

1st: What is the weapon that defies death?

Michael: Aliviar has gone by many names, but the Sword of Suture’s true strength lies in its ability to heal life, rather than steal life. Once the blade’s tip is excised, the wound it comes into contact with closes.

1st: What does it mean to be a hypercritical hero?

Michael: The hypercritical hero is a hero for the overthinkers of the world. The hero who tries to control everything, usually to their own detriment, and notices everything wrong.

1st: Is “The Healer’s Blade” your typical sword and sorcery book?

Michael: The Healer’s Blade takes everything you know about sword and sorcery and turns it on its head. How many sword and sorcery books are about uniting a kingdom without blood?

1st: Can you tell us about “The Healer’s Blade”?

Michael: This story actually began as an anthology submission for Sharp Wit & the Company of Women. I was not one of the creators selected to contribute. The idea was to invert the concept of Barbaric from Vault Comics. Instead of abloodthirstyy axe, we have a sword that heals wounds.

1st: Do you enjoy going to conventions?

Michael: Do you want the real answer? I’m kidding. I love going to conventions. It is fun to meet everyone and be able to get my stories out there. I also love connecting with other creators and seeing the cool things being made. It can be a mental slog, but I’m getting better each time.

1st: What are you currently working on, andwhat do you have planned for the future?

Michael: Currently, I am working on The Twin Flames with Summit Comics, Kid Cretaceous #3, Omens of Olympus, and The Healer’s Blade. I’m also editing and working for Summit Comics in my off time.

1st: What is the most important thing in your life?

Michael: The most important thing in my life is my family. Everything I do is for my wife and two daughters. I don’t think there’s anything else I was put on Earth to do more than be a loving father & husband.

1st: What would you like to say to the fans of your writing?

Michael: I would like to tell fans of my writing to never give up on their dreams. There will always be people who say no, but don’t hold themselves to limitations placed on you by other people.
