First Comics News: What was your first published comic book and how did that feel?
Eric Palicki: I’ve been doing this for over a decade now, but my first actual published AND distributed (by Diamond – R.I.P.) comic was Fake Empire, a graphic novel published by Darby Pop and illustrated by Vinnie Rico. My Marvel comics debut, a backup in Guardians of Infinity #6, was published a week later. Boy, did I think I’d made it then.
1st: What writing work of yours are you most proud of?
Eric: I’m proud of all my work, but look at what’s building here with Summit. It’s an incredible feat to get all these talents together and get them working as one to build something as ambitious as an entire universe from scratch. I’m proud of all these creators.
1st: Would you like to do more writing for Marvel Comics?
Eric: Sure. And the editors there have my email address, but we’re coming up on ten years since I did anything, so I’m not holding my breath.
1st: What elements do you try to add to a story to make it interesting?
Eric: Storytelling is the easiest thing in the world, but telling one people want to read, that’s the hard part. To do that, I try to make it personal. So much of my work is about weirdos finding their place in the world, which mirrors my own life, and look, I’ve found my tribe at Summit.
With Mourn Bedlam, specifically, she’s a washed-up musician and washed-up secret agent who almost had the life she wanted but fell a little short. As a comics writer in his forties who had a gig at Marvel a decade ago and watched his Black Mask contemporaries explode, I’m not sure how much more biographical this story can be.
Hopefully, there’s enough of me in this story to make it interesting to readers. That’s always the goal.

1st: What movie or TV series would you like to work on if it was adopted to a comic book?
Eric: Highlander. Let me make some Connor McLeod comics, dammit.
1st: How do you spend any free time you get?
Eric: Ha! Writing is how I spend my free time. Work/Life balance is for people with healthier boundaries.
1st: Would you like to say anything to the fans of your work?
Eric: If you like my work, I hope you’ll check out the entire Summit universe, beginning with Pinnacle. These are all incredibly talented creators, and I wouldn’t be here among them if I didn’t think they shared my storytelling sensibilities.
“Summit: Pinnacle #1 is now live on Kickstarter. Featuring over a dozen stories from two dozen creators, the issue serves as the launchpad for the wider Summit Universe.”
