RICH INTERVIEWS: Adam Rose

First Comics News: What made you decide you wanted to be a writer?

Adam Rose:
I think it started with my love of reading comics, fiction, plays, and more! I could read the ingredients on the back of my Captain Crunch box and be enthralled! I love coming up with stories and finding characters that speak to me. Hopefully, readers get a kick out of the characters and dig seeing the twisty paths I put them on.

1st: Are you an avid reader?

Adam: As I mentioned before, I love reading. I have devoured so many volumes of fantasy, sci-fi, mystery, and more. I suppose the one genre I have read the least of is Westerns, but I did have a Louis L’Amour stint a while back.

1stIn “Huge Detective”, what is the storyline?

Adam: “Huge Detective” is a fantasy noir that takes place in a world of humans and Huge (beings the size of skyscrapers). People and Huge start to go missing, and the only suspect/witness is a human who thinks he’s a Huge.

1stWho are Tamaki and Gyant, and what are their personalities?

Adam: Tamaki is our human protagonist and lead detective. She has a traumatic history with the Huge and uses pills as a coping mechanism. She has very strong feelings about the Huge, and when she is partnered up with Gyant, the challenge becomes overcoming deep-rooted prejudices. Gyant makes history by being the first Huge allowed on human soil since the Omega Event. He struggles with certain “urges” and desperately wants to be the olive branch between communities. Gyant is both big in size and in heart.

1st: How well does Magenta King’s art go with your writing?

Adam: I discovered Magenta’s incredible work with Kaiju in Jenny Zero and knew his Manga-inspired style would be the perfect fit. He has such a great sense of style and ability to capture the essence of a character through their body language and distinct facial expressions. His ability to play with scope and scale, and how inventive he can be, made him the perfect match!

1st: How can giants and humans co-exist?

Adam: That is the million-dollar question, and Huge Detective attempts to show how real the struggle to co-exist can be! In the end, I think it boils down to a realization that if they don’t find a way toward peace, then they must face the brutal possibility of mutually assured self-destruction.

1stWhat was the Omega Event?

Adam: Wow! You really want to get right to the lore of Huge Detective. The Omega Event was the use of something (yes, I am being intentionally vague) man-made that triggered the reintroduction/eruption of the slumbering Huge below the earth’s crust. As a result, the Omega Event morphed into a devastating war between humans and the Huge.

1st: How did you come up with the idea to have giants and humans together as detectives?

Adam: When my daughter was a bit younger, I would make up stories to tell her at bedtime. It started with the idea of a girl befriending a giant and going on some wild adventures, but when I closed the door to my daughter’s bedroom, my mind went to a more noir-inspired fantasy world that I jumped into writing.

1st: How many issues would you like to see of “Huge Detective?

Adam: The first volume is five issues, and I have many more story arcs that I would love to see come to life. The world of Huge Detective is an expansive sandbox to play in.

1st: In “Corollary,” who is Captain Andromeda?

Adam: I love that you are going back to Corollary! Captain Andromeda is a twin claiming to be the only twin in a galaxy of twins to survive the dreaded “twin death”. In this universe, if your twin dies, so do you…

1stIs “Playground: Attack of the Gurgle Bots!!!” a book any age can enjoy, or just younger readers?

Adam: I think it is geared towards young readers, BUT who wouldn’t want to read about a world where any childhood playground game can be REAL! I feel like someone with the powers of TV Tag is a lot like a Green Lantern!

1st: Would you like to enter the world of “Huge Detective” and meet a giant?

Adam: I would have some reservations about the meeting, but I would be up for it. I might want a clearly marked exit… just in case.

1st: What do you do with any free time you have?

Adam: If I am not spending time with my family, I sometimes draw. Drawing helps me come up with ideas and how I communicate with the artists I work with.

1st: What would you like to say to your readers?

Adam: I really appreciate you giving Huge Detective a read! If you want to see what else is going on in my world of writing, check me out on IG: @shazamcap or my website: adamharryrose.com
