Meat Eaters (2025)

This week, I’m excited to share my thoughts on “Meat Eaters,” a captivating graphic novel by Meredith McClaren. It tells the story of nineteen-year-old Ashley Moore, who unexpectedly discovers she’s undead. All Ashley wanted was to keep a low profile until she could escape her small, stuck-in-a-rut town. But one night, after waking up covered in blood—and realizing she’s now irreversibly dead—she finds her foolproof plan to get away has failed, and something inside her has shifted. With no heartbeat and an unsettling craving for fresh meat, Ashley finds herself in a hidden, mysterious world beneath ours—a place filled with ghouls, monsters, and things that go bump in the night. As she navigates this strange realm, receiving advice from wise ancient vampires, avoiding fierce pack leaders, and becoming an unlikely big sister to some mischievous werewolves, Ashley faces the challenge of leaving behind parts of her past—and herself that she’d rather forget. What she learns is that the truth can’t stay buried forever.
This intense story about trauma and anxiety reminds us that dying is indeed hard, but it’s told in a way that feels both heartfelt and relatable. Unlike traditional horror, this story dives deep into themes like mental health, trauma, and introversion, offering fresh and thoughtful perspectives. McClaren’s sharp dialogue has a tone reminiscent of Kelly Thompson meets Peter David, showing her talent for creating compelling characters who are trying to find their way while managing their cravings—and building friendships, like those with werewolves Motley and Harrison. Since it’s a horror story, it doesn’t shy away from the gory details, but it keeps things lighthearted and charming at the same time. The coming-of-age elements add an extra layer of depth, making the story even more engaging and offering a unique look into the supernatural world. McClaren’s artwork, with its lively, animated Sean Galloway style, perfectly complements her storytelling and really brings the characters and scenes to life. While some moments might be a little confusing or feel a bit stretched out, overall, it’s a captivating journey into the paranormal, blending real-life emotions effortlessly. This is a must-read for fans of genre stories, dark humor, and meaningful storytelling.
Well, that’s it for me this week. Thanks for sticking around, and I look forward to seeing you next time.
