This week, I will examine the most unexpected crossover so far: Archie Meets Jay & Silent Bob from Archie Comics.
What begins as a summer job at Quick Stop for Archie Andrews turns into much more; from forming a new friendship with co-worker Randal Graves, sneaking into a Pussycats concert, to a potential new romantic interest—plus Jay and Silent Bob being, well, Jay and Silent Bob—this is undeniably a nonstop comedy filled with Smith’s trademark humor and his talent for delivering captivating dialogue. It’s also delightful to watch Archie and his friends from Riverdale seamlessly fit into the View Askewniverse, as Smith includes numerous easter eggs from his previous films effortlessly. While the typical View Askew humor is also front and center (the language is certainly plentiful, despite Archie’s wholesome image), it’s done in a way that introduces a new dynamic to the Archie universe without disrespecting these classic characters or making them seem outdated. Even if some Kevin Smith fans or Archie enthusiasts might find common ground in appreciating this crossover, it’s clear that Smith himself enjoyed creating this unique story, especially since it takes place after the events of “Clerks 3.” It’s a strange yet delightful experience to see Archie out of his element, dealing with his job at Quick Stop. The artwork by Fernando Ruiz and Rich Koslowski does an excellent job of blending the View Askewniverse characters with the Archie universe, successfully merging the optimistic vibe of Archie with the more risqué elements of the View Askewniverse. While some might argue that Smith mainly wrote this crossover for his own fun, it’s safe to say that his script is bold and humorous enough to entertain a wide audience. Even if some moments bring back nostalgia, this remains, to date, the best crossover ever produced by Archie Comics, making readers wonder whether Archie was truly meant to be working during his shift.
Well, that’s it for me. Thanks for sticking around, and I look forward to seeing you all next time.
