This week, I examined issue number one of “Wrestle Heist” from Image Comics, a new series by writer/artist Kyle Starks. It features Sterling Steele, a former pro wrestler who narrowly escapes death after a run-in with corrupt promoter Buddy Hansen. Steele assembles a team of wrestlers he’s betrayed to rob Hansen during the year’s biggest wrestling event. Although combining a heist story with wrestling might seem challenging, Starks, a dedicated wrestling fan, infuses the story with a quirky tone that prevents it from feeling clichéd. The series offers a behind-the-scenes look at the wrestling industry and humorously explores backstage politics—Buddy Hansen, for example, looks like a more villainous Paul Heyman. Initially, the focus is on Steele’s desire to recover from a career-ending injury and seek revenge on Hansen, which makes him a relatable and sympathetic character for wrestling fans. Instead of a dark, intense tone, Starks keeps it light, making Steele’s eventual revenge more satisfying. Clever writing and artwork vividly depict wrestling’s physicality and brutality while tongue-in-cheek references add fun. Outrageous, zany, and engaging, Wrestle Heist amplifies wrestling’s high-energy vibe and refreshes classic heist tropes with enthusiasm, making it a highly enjoyable series that’s off to a great start.
