This week, I will analyze issue one of “Whatever Happened To The Crimson Justice” from Mad Cave Studios. There was a time when the Red Alert illuminated the sky, and Empire City’s foremost hero, the Crimson Justice, would respond to any call for help. However, it has been years since he, his sidekick Reddy, and their deranged nemesis, Dr. Mayhem, were last seen following the devastating Great Empire City Hospital Fire decades ago. What transpired that night? Did they perish? If so, then who is this Dr. Mayhem resurfacing in the present day, viciously killing Commissioner Thomas Kent and daring the Justice to make a comeback? Is it truly possible? Does the Crimson Justice still exist? If so, what could have led him to vanish and forsake his crimson mantle?
From afar, it’s evident that Frank Tieri drew heavily from “Batman: The Dark Knight Returns,” weaving many of its hallmark features into this narrative. Yet, he skillfully keeps it feeling original without rehashing any threads from the Dark Knight saga. Instead, he presents a compelling interpretation of the street-level vigilante, fusing the grim, gritty undertones reminiscent of a classic ’90s HBO series, all while ensuring the exploration of dark themes is profound, giving readers a richer understanding of Empire City, Mr. Mayhem, and the now-quiet existence of the Crimson Justice since his retirement. Inaki Miranda’s artwork captures the dark nuances and street-level elements that Tieri elaborates on, effectively heightening the horror that pervades Empire City, making him the ideal artist for this series. With many elements paying tribute to “DKR,” it appears Tieri also takes cues from Frank Miller’s highly regarded Daredevil series, signaling to readers that this is far from a conventional superhero tale while setting the groundwork for the Crimson Justice’s return. It’s fair to say this new series, though shocking and gritty, does not introduce anything particularly novel but resonates with the themes of heroism and redemption that characterize vigilante narratives for a new generation of readers. One thing is certain: Justice seems poised to run red again, and readers can expect an exhilarating and unforgettable journey.
Well, that’s it for me this week. Thanks for sticking around, and I look forward to seeing you all next time.
