REVIEW CORNER: Transformers # 1

Transformers # 1 (2023)
Writer/Artist: Daniel Warren Johnson
Colorist: Mike Spicer

This week I will look at Transformers # 1 from Skybound/Image Comics where everyone’s favorite Autobots get handled in a new direction courtesy of Daniel Warren Johnson, who’s working with showrunner Robert Kirkman to build the Energon Universe. The story kicks off with both the Autobots and the Deceptions crashlanding on Earth. Soon after, they rekindle their rivalry which doesn’t bode well for humanity.
Johnson quickly established a tone that would please both fans old and new but at the same time, making this issue feel fresh and innovative. I also enjoy how he handles the characters and the franchise as a whole but he does it from a fan’s perspective I feel this is a wonderful element for him to work with because too many creators come on a beloved franchise such as this one and make drastic changes that don’t go over well with the fans, fortunately, Johnson never has that trouble as he introduces many plot points that will surprise the fans while keeping their continuity intact. I should also point out that Johnson’s artwork, accomplished by the brilliant coloring of Mike Spicer is awe-inspiring and makes both the action sequences and the more grounded moments realistic. This new series does an excellent job of delivering a new era while keeping the nostalgic factor alive and well, making this a series no one should miss out on.
Well, that’s it for me this week. Thanks for sticking around. I will see you all next time.
