The final issue of this unique anthology series features two stories that give a chilling twist to the superhero genre. Since the series is ending, it not only chills about superheroes but also their fans.
The Ram V/Riccardo Burchielli story, “Superfan,” darkly explores the “never meet your heroes” trope by following an intense comic book superfan whose apartment is a shrine to the absent superhero Kilonova. His obsession, however, takes a sinister turn when he finally interacts with the hero. Meanwhile, Christian Ward and Fabio Veras craft a supernatural thriller centered on the Phantom Professor, a Doctor Strange-like character, examining the human and terrifying consequences of practicing mystic arts. While this Doctor Strange-inspired story offers a disturbing take on the mystic arts and missing children, the Ram V/Riccardo Burchielli story stands out for its unsettling look at fandom, with Kilonova giving his biggest fan a chilling glimpse of his future and explaining his disappearance. This story is engaging and suggests that reading about heroes in comics might be preferable to meeting them, as face-to-face encounters can shatter the illusion of these larger-than-life figures. Burchielli’s art enhances the horror and realism, while the Ward/Veras tale intensifies the supernatural horror, adding an extra layer of chills. Super Creepshow continues its tradition of offering thought-provoking, horror-filled tales that provide intriguing insights into the superhero genre. Its grand finale leaves us with a memorable mix of delight and eeriness.
