This week, I review issue number one of “Super Creepshow,” the latest spin-off from “Creepshow” that, following the success of the 2025 “Super Creepshow Special,” gives superheroes a horrifying twist.
First, comic icons Kieron Gillen (Young Avengers, Darth Vader) and Rossi Gifford craft a frightening story that will make your spider sense tingle! Next, Eisner Award winners Ryan North (Fantastic Four) and Derek Charm (The Unbeatable Squirrel Girl) present the case that super speed is the most terrifying power. These two stories balance horror and superhero themes perfectly—an innovative combination that makes the Creepshow franchise shine brighter than ever. The Kieron Gillen/Rossi Gifford “Spider-Guy” story stands out for its chilling reinterpretation of Spider-Man lore, shifting away from Silver Age charm to a horror focus reminiscent of David Cronenberg’s style. It leaves a lasting impression, especially for those wary of spider bites because of the body horror elements. Meanwhile, the Ryan North/Derek Charm “Speed Kills” story highlights the terrifying physical consequences of super speed, delivering a nightmarish tone that feels eternal. Although the two stories may seem rushed, their frightening takes on Spider-Man and The Flash are more than enough to delight Creepshow fans, showcasing how the superhero genre can be transformed into chilling horror while leaving them eager for more.
