This week, I will review issue one of Speed Racer from Mad Cave Studios. An all-new take on Tatsuo Yoshida’s classic manga and anime, MachGoGoGo, known to Western audiences as Speed Racer! Speed Racer lives for the thrill of racing, but on the underground circuit, the rules are anything goes. Dodging bullets, explosions, and dirty tricks, he has one goal: to show he’s the best. But when a dangerous syndicate targets his family, Speed’s biggest challenge won’t be on the track… it’ll be on the streets.

Blending action, drama, and plenty of emotion, David Pepose again demonstrates his talent for reinventing timeless franchises that spark nostalgia to the highest level. While some elements in this issue may seem inspired by the “Fast & Furious” movies because of the intense family drama (be thankful Speed is no Dom Toretto), he stays true to the source material while reintroducing Speed to a new audience. And let’s not forget the amazing artwork of Davide Tinto, whose brilliance in mixing anime with modern sensibility brings this series together, complemented by Rex Lotus’ vibrant coloring that makes Tinto’s art stand out with excitement. Speed Racer is, without a doubt, a high-octane action story that honors the original while adding fresh and innovative elements, appealing to both old and new fans. For those who didn’t enjoy the 2008 movie directed by The Wachowskis, this is the Speed Racer they’ve been waiting for—and they won’t be disappointed.

Well, that’s it for me. Thanks for sticking around, and I look forward to seeing you next time.
