This week, I will review issue one of “Ghost Pepper” from Image Comics. This series is ideal for fans of THE MOON IS FOLLOWING US and BATTLE CHASERS. It’s a new action series by rising star Ludo Lullabi (known for Transformers and Battle Chasers) about forgotten heroes, ruthless food trucks, and saving the world. Humanity survived a monstrous threat, but not everyone benefits. Each day, Loloi travels to serve her delicious meals, outwitting treacherous rivals and staying ahead of towering robots that ‘protect’ everyone. Everything changes when she meets Ash, a mysterious warrior whose secrets could save the world—if his superhuman strength doesn’t destroy it first.
Though it might seem like just another apocalyptic story, the unique element that ties it together is the food truck navigating the chaotic world created by Lullabi, where communities gather over food—a charming touch. Still, the action and intensity prevent it from feeling like a simple feel-good sci-fi story, especially when focusing on Ash. Lullabi introduces the familiar “mysterious stranger with no memory” trope here. Even though it’s common, he handles it well by shifting the focus from Loloi to Ash. Some parts may feel hurried, but the sharp interactions between Ash and Loloi energize the story. Lullabi’s art, inspired by Joe Madureira, features a wide-eyed style that keeps the series lively even when the plot seems unfocused. Despite some flaws, this series shows great promise and is a fun read for fans of gritty, Mad Max-style adventures, especially those who enjoy intense apocalyptic themes.
Well, that’s it for me. Thanks for sticking around, and I look forward to seeing you next time.
