This week, I’ll review issue one of “Gehenna: Naked Aggression” from Image Comics. A contract has been placed on Gehenna, yet she has survived long enough for it to change hands multiple times as consolidated debt among various criminal organizations. Now, she aims to end the chain of custody for that contract. This comic is an explosive action narrative that celebrates relentless action throughout the issue, merging the raw elements of “Pulp Fiction” with the brutal themes found in Garth Ennis’ “Punisher” series. While these influences enhance the enjoyment, it is Patrick Kindlon’s incisive and impactful writing, paired with Maurizio Rosenweig’s gritty artwork, that infuses the story with rich layers, especially regarding Gehenna’s backstory. The story revolves around a mother seeking revenge against the criminals who murdered her family, while simultaneously keeping the son of a mob boss company, and evading a pair of detectives pursuing her. This is not just another Punisher copycat; it’s a daring, unconventional vigilante tale that embraces its mob-centric atmosphere. It captures the essence of vengeance and tells a story that will resonate with true crime enthusiasts.
Well, that’s it for me. Thank you for sticking around, and I look forward to seeing you all next time.
