This week, I will examine issue number one of “G.I. JOE A REAL AMERICAN HERO- SILENT MISSIONS: ZARTAN” from the renowned creative team of Tom DeFalco (known for Amazing Spider-Man, Spider-Girl & Thor) and Pat Olliffe (Spider-Girl).
In this second installment of the ‘Silent Missions” one-shots, Zartan finds himself engaged in a perilous undercover operation, where he must cleverly outmaneuver Cobra Commander, Major Bludd, and the G.I. JOE team. Although devoid of dialogue, this issue delivers considerable intense action, maintaining a brisk pace that enhances the narrative flow. DeFalco’s compelling storytelling clarifies the concept effectively, while Olliffe’s visuals remain impressive and engaging without signs of fatigue. The bold and dynamic presentation of action and suspense exemplifies their exceptional creative synergy, elevating any concept—particularly a dialogue-free story—to remarkable heights. The story, however, adeptly utilizes the silent format with significant brilliance, fostering hope that Image Comics might someday endorse a Zartan series under the direction of DeFalco and Olliffe because such a series would undoubtedly spotlight this character in a manner truly deserving of recognition.
