This week, I will review issue two of First Guard, a recent release from G-Man Comics.
Continuing from the first issue, The First Guard, the heroes pursue Agent Squires after a run-in with Doc Chronos, only to clash with their 1960s counterparts. This escalation leads to an epic battle for the ages. The issue maintains the high stakes, with intense and lively fights, featuring characters like Taranis the Thunderlord vs. Coporal Atlas, Scrab vs. Blue Bolt, and Tectonic vs. Arrowhead. It exemplifies how hero-vs-hero conflicts can be innovative and engaging without recycling tired plot elements. Kudos to Eric N. Bennett for his skillful handling of multiple characters and respect for Silver Age comics, even if begrudgingly. Ron C. Williams’ artwork adds a sharp, vibrant tone reminiscent of the Bronze Age, with influences from Mark Bagley visible upon close inspection. Though only the second issue, First Guard celebrates a glorious era of classic storytelling that remains vibrant in these pages. Fans will enjoy immersing themselves repeatedly, reaffirming that timeless superhero tales continue to resonate.
