This week, I’m excited to share my thoughts on issue one of “Dead Presidents” from Big Bear Studios, a fresh new comic book company from Fresno, CA.
It’s an action-packed and funny series that asks: What if the US government cloned and trained Washington, Jefferson, and Franklin for secret missions? If you remember the animated MTV series “Clone High” from the mid-2000s, created by Phil Lord and Christopher Miller (who also made the “Spider-Verse” movies) and Bill Lawrence (“Scrubs”), then you’ll likely love this series too. It has a similar idea, but what makes “Dead Presidents” stand out is its willingness to show some blood and explore drama, blending well with its humor. This balance creates a dynamic mix of action and comedy. Dave Kleiman’s script does a fantastic job, giving Benjamin Franklin a funny, rough-around-the-edges personality; Thomas Jefferson, however, is a bit wild, and George Washington tries hard to keep everyone together. It might seem like over-the-top satire, but honestly, it’s turning into a compelling story where style and substance shine on every page. Scott Fry’s artwork gives the series a sleek, polished look that draws you in and pairs perfectly with Kleiman’s witty script. Barry Williams’ coloring adds even more richness, making the whole series feel complete. While “Dead Presidents” has the nostalgic feel of classic action movies from the ‘80s and ‘90s, it also marks an exciting new chapter for Big Bear Studios, showing readers that it’s like G.I. Joe — but even better and more worth your time.
Well, that’s it for me. Thanks for sticking around, and I look forward to seeing you next time.
