This week, I’ll dive into “Captain Planet & The Planeteers #!” from Dynamite Entertainment.
With the powers of Earth, Fire, Wind, Water, and Heart combined, they summon Earth’s greatest hero: Captain Planet! However, they first need to learn how to trust one another. Gaia, the new High Priestess of the Earth, has been kidnapped, which prompts the Planeteers to band together against the formidable Lucian Plunder! Even with Captain Planet by their side, will it be enough to protect our beloved planet? David Pepose does a fantastic job reimagining iconic pop-culture characters like “Space Ghost” and “Speed Racer,” now he turns his attention to Captain Planet. Along with artist Eman Casallos, he brings us a fresh and exciting reboot that honors the beloved 90s cartoon. Pepose’s script offers an engaging mix of superhero themes while giving a contemporary twist to the character, ensuring he remains relevant. What’s particularly noteworthy about this series is its thoughtful engagement with the environmental issues central to the animated series. Pepose and Casallos (whose powerful artwork complements Pepose’s script) weave these themes throughout the story in a way that feels timely, skillfully combining entertainment with meaningful social commentary. Additionally, Pepose develops rich backstories for the Planeteers, allowing readers to connect with them while distinguishing them from previous versions. Captain Planet & The Planeteers #1 kicks off an impressive reboot that resonates with nostalgia, appealing to long-time fans who will appreciate the new foundation laid by Pepose and Casallos, while new readers will easily connect with this iteration, making it a must-read series for everyone!
Well, that’s it for me. Thanks for sticking around, and I look forward to seeing you next time.
