This week, I’ll review Bridge Planet Nine, a gritty sci-fi heist story by Jared Thorne.
Once a thriving outpost, Bridge Planet Nine is now deserted, with corporations claiming its remaining natural resources for automated extraction, and even refueling freighters operating unmanned. One of these freighters is about to be robbed. The small, reluctant hijacking crew each has personal reasons for being there, and with no one nearby for millions of miles, they don’t expect interference. However, the planet’s dark history and secrets turn their simple job into a brutal fight for survival. At first glance, the graphic novel resembles a typical heist story with clichés like revenge or risking everything to rescue a loved one, grounded with realistic stakes despite its sci-fi setting. The plot shifts when the crew reaches Bridge Planet Nine, and chaos erupts, elevating the story from mediocrity. Thorne excels here, infusing intense, dramatic flair, all while making it easy for the crew to adapt their plans from one last heist to surviving, which energizes the pacing. The action and drama unfold seamlessly, immersing readers in the story’s brutal scope. The black-and-white artwork adds a sleek, tense atmosphere that enhances the overall experience, offering a level of visual boldness rare in such comics. While the story carries significant weight, it sometimes feels rushed, with the ending lacking the satisfaction of a truly memorable conclusion—though Thorne adjusts it smoothly so it’s easy for readers to endure the violence and chaos. The Hollywood-style ending, while safe, somewhat diminishes the story’s realism, but it remains a compelling crime sci-fi tale. It’s a story fans of heist and sci-fi genres will enjoy, showcasing Thorne’s storytelling talent. Despite the mixed elements and an unsatisfying finale, this graphic novel could pave the way for Thorne’s future work, where his storytelling strengths can truly shine. Overall, it’s a highly recommended read.
Well, that’s it for me. Thanks for sticking around, and I look forward to seeing you all next time.
