This week, I will examine issue number four of “Assorted Crisis Events” from Image Comics. The latest installment narrates the story of Mike, a man who perpetually loses track of time. He may have married and become a parent, but the next moment, he looks up to find that they are grown or that his wife has disappeared.
This work serves as a lesson for us all, emphasizing the importance of pausing and reflection, as neglecting such moments could result in sudden endings. Writer Denis Camp explores the passage of time with profound emotional depth, imbued with a haunting quality that reveals the most poignant facets of everyday life and highlights how some individuals take certain aspects for granted, particularly those concerning marriage and maintaining relationships. The narrative becomes even more poignant as Mike recognizes that he has reached a low point due to numerous time jumps. Concurrently, Camp, in collaboration with Eric Zawadzki, enhances the story’s oddities through compelling artwork, complemented by exceptional coloring by Jordie Bellaire. The storytelling is executed with conviction, replete with genuine twists and turns. However, it falls short in terms of integrating the sci-fi element that constitutes the core of this series. Instead, the focus shifts to a more introspective human consciousness, which, although a departure from the sci-fi themes of previous installments, renders this story reminiscent of a lost episode of “The Twilight Zone.” This shift only heightens its intrigue. Overall, the narrative serves as a poignant reminder of the swift passage of time—an idea that can evoke comfort in some and fear in others, depending on individual perspectives. I believe Rod Serling would have appreciated exploring this concept. Fans of the series are encouraged to look forward to further stories of this nature.
Well, that’s it for me. Thanks for sticking around, and I look forward to seeing you all next time.
