Philbo Distribution Expands Into Print-on-Demand Production, Targeting Indie Comics Market

Philbo Distribution, a smaller comic book distributor formed following the collapse of Diamond Comic Distributors, is broadening its operations to include in-house printing services, the company announced. The move introduces a print-on-demand (POD) model designed to serve independent publishers and creators, with production taking place at the same facility used for distribution.

Company officials say the integrated approach aims to streamline the publishing pipeline while reducing costs and logistical complications. By combining printing and distribution under one roof, Philbo expects to offer publishers greater flexibility, faster turnaround times, and more predictable release schedules.

In a statement, founder Phillip Russertt said the initiative is intended to address longstanding challenges in the independent comics sector, particularly those tied to overseas printing. Domestic, on-site production is expected to minimize shipping expenses, avoid freight delays, and reduce the risk of late deliveries, while maintaining print quality comparable to traditional offset methods.

“This changes the financial landscape for smaller publishers,” Russertt said. “We’re removing major barriers like high shipping costs and long production timelines, while still delivering professional-grade results.”

Alongside its new POD service, Philbo is rolling out a range of expanded offerings aimed at both publishers and retailers. These include returnability options for comic shops, tiered discounts that can reach up to 50 percent, and consistent release scheduling regardless of print volume. The company also plans to support crowdfunding fulfillment, produce marketing materials such as convention banners, and publish both a print catalog of its titles and a new comics-focused magazine.

Russertt added that the POD model allows publishers to avoid large upfront print runs, improving cash flow while maintaining scalability. He described the expansion as an early step in building a more sustainable distribution ecosystem for independent comics.

The company said the new printing services are expected to launch in the coming months, with additional capabilities to be introduced as demand grows. Philbo currently distributes titles from a wide range of independent publishers, reflecting its focus on the small-press segment of the comics industry.
