The art, while I guarantee it won’t be something everyone appreciates, often manages to carry the story through wordless panels and pages. That is a real credit to Michèle Fischels as an artist.

As a story, I will admit I may be a little too removed—decades, actually—from my final year of high school. So, reading a book in 2026 about that pivotal year doesn’t always jibe with my personal memories.

It may seem clichéd to say that 1978 was a simpler time, but I don’t recall many of the realities Fischels writes about here. That doesn’t lessen the story’s impact, but it does affect how I relate to it. I’m simply not as invested as I imagine someone who recently graduated from high school might be.

Thankfully, though, Fischels tells the story with a voice that is thin on words, making Outline a quick read despite its 200 pages. It’s certainly worth a look.

Outline is Fischels’s debut graphic novel.
