Recently, Trevor and I rolled the bones for Sports Dice Hockey, and the game sadly fell flatter than a player run over by the Zamboni.
So you can imagine the trepidation we felt as we pulled the cellophane off Sports Dice Baseball.
Sports Dice Baseball, from designer Andy Geremia and publisher FoxMind, is very clearly a sibling to the aforementioned hockey game. In fact, there’s a whole family of these titles from FoxMind, including basketball, soccer, and more.
The good news? This one proves to be the slightly smarter sibling.
Now, in no way would we call this one an out-of-the-park dinger.
But while hockey was a lazy grounder back to the pitcher, this one is at least a dying quail single.
In baseball, for two players, you each toss a handful of dice (six, to be exact). One player uses the batter’s dice, while the other pitches. After three outs, you switch roles.
This version mimics the sport better. You move “meeple” players around the bases, and you can hit a dinger or even pull off a triple play, creating some genuinely fun moments, that little shot of happy adrenaline.
Still, this is a game without much strategy.
You can’t mitigate the luck associated with the dice rolls.
Now, over a favourite brew, this one is fine, although you are likely to have better options, Othello, Abalone, and so on. But if you’re longing for baseball in January, Sports Dice Baseball is worth a try.
